We have a 4 year-old Schnauzer Poodle mix (just under 20 lbs) and were expecting our first baby. The dog has always been very trainable and listens very well, except for his barking when he hears something outside, or someone coming in the front door. It didn't matter what we tried, we could not get him to stop barking when we told him to stop. I didn't want him to be waking our new baby with his out-of-control barking so I tried this little device. It was much more effective the first couple of times we used it. He definitely didn't like the sound. But when he realized it was only a sound, he would just continue to bark through it. We can now sit next to him and hold the button down and he will continue to bark as loudly and fiercely as ever. He shakes his head and tries to move away from it, but he will not stop barking. I have tried other things like tapping him over the end of his nose and spraying him with water but nothing has made any difference. I don't want to say this is fully the fault of this device, because I clearly have a stubborn dog who is otherwise a very good listener. However, I did have high hopes that this would be the answer for us and it did not help. It seems like it would work well on a less determined dog. It might have even helped more if we had it when he was very young. Overall, I'd say it's worth a try. It probably just wasn't the right tool for our dog.
